Prominent Gaza doctor dies in Israeli prison

CAIRO/RAMALLAH, West Bank, May 2 (Reuters) - A senior Palestinian doctor died in an Israeli prison after more than four months of detention, two Palestinian prisoner associations said on Thursday, blaming Israel for his death.

The associations said in a joint statement that Adnan Al-Bursh, head of orthopedics at Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical facility, had been detained by Israeli forces while temporarily working at Al-Awada Hospital in north Gaza.

They called his death an "assassination" and said his body remained in Israeli custody.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that the prison service had declared Bursh dead on April 19, saying that he had been detained for national security reasons in Ofer prison. The spokesperson did not comment on the cause of death.

Medical groups, including the World Health Organization, have repeatedly called for a halt to attacks on Gaza healthcare workers, with more than 200 killed so far in the Gaza conflict, according to an estimate from Insecurity Insight, opens new tab, a research group that collects and analyses data on attacks on aid workers around the world.

The Palestinian health ministry said in a statement that Bursh’s death raised to 496 the number of medical sector workers who had been killed by Israel since Oct 7. It added that 1,500 others had been wounded while 309 had been arrested.

Report: Hamas Accepts Gaza Cease-fire Deal; Israeli Officials Reject Prospect of War Ending

According to the report, Hamas was guaranteed by the U.S. for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and that Israeli forces will not continue fighting once the hostages are released ■ An Israeli official told Haaretz that 'Israel will, under no circumstances, agree to end the war as part of a deal' and is determined to enter Rafah.

Hamas is expected to announce on Saturday that it is accepting Egypt's proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages, the Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq reported on Saturday morning.
According to the report, intensive talks have been underway in the last hours between Egypt and Qatar and the delegations of Israel and Hamas about prisoners to be released in the deal.

The report added that Hamas was guaranteed by the United States for a cease-fire and full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in the third phase of the deal (detailed below), and a promise that Israeli forces will not continue fighting after the release of the hostages.

Commenting on the report, an Israeli official told Haaretz that Israel is "waiting anxiously to see Hamas' final position."

"The information has not yet arrived, but in light of past experience, even if Hamas says it's following the suggested framework, the small details and reservations it'll eventually present may dissolve the whole deal," the source added.

Another Israeli official told Haaretz that, contrary to reports, "Israel will, under no circumstances, agree to end the war as part of a deal to release the hostages" and is determined to enter Rafah "either if the cease-fire will be temporary or not."
Minister Benny Gantz said that Hamas has not yet given an official answer to the Egyptian proposal for a hostage deal, and if Hamas accepts it, the war cabinet will meet to discuss the matter.
