How can I switch a TW263R4-B2 in to a wireless repeater / access point

First of all I want to say hello to everyone! I hope I am not breaking any rules here by writing in English. If I am, please forgive me. I'm an American who has been living in Greece only a few short years so my Greek isn't very good. I tried searching the internet and other forums and was unable to find the information I needed so I hope someone in this group will be able to help me.

My problem is that in our house we don't get a good signal upstairs. The current modem/router we have from OTE is a Thomson Gateway TG585 v8. I would like to take the older Baudtec TW263R4-B2 modem/router which we have and turn it in to a wireless access point / repeater. I read that doing such a thing is theoretically possible by changing the firmware to dd-wrt (http://www.dd-wrt.com). I know that if it is done improperly or if the device is not compatible with dd-wrt it can brick the router. The Baudtec TW263R4-B2 is not listed on their compatibility list let alone any other Baudtec routers. So before I did anything stupid I wanted to check with you guys to see if you know whether or not dd-wrt is compatible with Baudtec TW263R4-B2?


Sorry again for writing in English but my Greek isn't good enough to explain what I need to here and I know Google translate wouldn't even come close to doing it justice. Thank you for your time.

I know this is not answering your question.
Unless you have a lot of free time, just buy yourself a repeater. I bought this one, from plaisio: http://www.plaisio.gr/periferiaka-ot...RPT-100PES.htm

It was up and running in 15 minutes.
If your modem is not in the dd-wrt list, most probably dd-wrt will not work for it. Unless you have a lot of free time...

Thank you for the reply and for mentioning the repeater you bough. I was hoping to do this without having to buy another piece of hardware. It is not of the utmost importance right now to have a strong signal upstairs but it would be nice which is why I thought to try and put my old router to some good use. I guess if no one here knows for sure whether or not it will work then I guess I will dismantle it and look at the chipset to try and determine if it will be compatible. Thank you again.

TW263R4-B2 for sure is working only on Access Point mode and not as repeater.
For that operation should be wired connected to the main modem and operated on Bridge Encapsulation.
If wired connection is feasible and want any help, I can post all settings.
Otherwise you need a dedicated Repeater or any Access Point capable of that mode (most of them).

Setting it up as a wired connection is something that is feasible as I have the necessary cables. Thank you for offering your help. I would appreciate it very much if you would post the settings for me.

1. Connect Baudtec only with a PC and on LAN menu set an unused IP from the same pool of the main modem/router. If, for example, your main modem/router has 192.168.1.1 set on Boudtec 192.168.1.10 (confirm that it is not used by another device).
2. On the same menu disable DHCP. When you press SAVE you 'll loose connection with Baudtec and you have to revert PC's IP to original one (if changed on step 1).
3. On Ιnternet - Encapsulation menu set ISP field to Bridge Mode.
4. On Firewall menu disable both fields (Firewall & SPI).
4. Connect Baudtec's No1 LAN port to any port of the main modem/router and make restart (OFF/ON).

Now for the wireless settings you have two options:
a. Use different Channel, SSID, Encryption, passkey etc, with main modem/router.
b. Use same SSID, Encryption, passkey with main modem/router but different Channel (± 4 digits).

With option (a) you have two completely independent wireless transmissions and you must manual change connection between them, wile with (b) you have two transmissions with same settings and devices will connect any moment on that with the stronger signal.

Thank you for the help. It worked like a charm. I had tried setting it up the way you described before but what I didn't think about was to change the channel. I was using the same channel as the original before and of course it didn't work. Everyone around me is using channel 6 so I'm running on channels 1 and 11. Thanks again!
